Alisha: I am currently a stay at home mom to two little boys: Truman is 4 and Harrison is 1 and we have a baby on the way. I started my shop when Truman was a baby and then business really picked up after my good friend Alix and my new good friend Dottie started modernkiddo.com. My shop is 90% vintage baby and children's clothes. I have thrifted since I was a kid and the children's clothes came into my life when my nephew was born. By the time I had my first baby I had quite the stockpile, a shop was necessary as there is no way my boys could wear all of these clothes!
VKC: Why are you drawn to vintage?
Alisha: I find the colors and fabrics used in vintage so charming. Things from the 60s and 70s especially have great colors. My all-time favorite vintage label is Health-tex, their clothes are just second to none for how adorable and durable they are!
VKC: Where do you find your treasures?
Alisha: I like to travel with the boys to suburban thrift stores as the prices are a bit better than the city and the selection tends to be amazing. The best though are the thrifts out on the Minnesota prairie! I often wonder if they will remember me hauling them all over to thrift stores!VKC: What is your process when creating/working?
Alisha: My process, believe it or not, is slowing down! I still have over 300 items in my shop so this seems kind of silly but it's true. Since Harry started walking, forget about it, I take pictures while the kids run willy nilly through the house and try and upload when they are napping or in bed.
VKC: How do you promote your business?
Alisha: Modernkiddo has been really kind to me. When I get some extra shop funds I will include a button on blogs that I love that also do what I do. Mostly I just try and do the best I can to get detailed listings on etsy and send things out in a timely fashion so people come back. My shop really is a labor of love.
VKC: What do you do when you are not working?
Alisha: I love to embroider, it's the one crafty skill that I was able to stick with when my mom taught me. I like to embroider practical items like burp cloths and dishtowels. When my kids get into school I will probably go back to work in independent publishing or work in a library, my masters is in library science so I read a lot. I love gardening and puttering in my yard in the summer and of course most of my time is spent with my family on adventures.VKC: What is your favorite item in your shop or that you have sold and why?
Alisha: I love anything with strawberries on it! Clothes, dishes, tablecloths, you name it.VKC: How do you juggle your business and your personal life/motherhood?
Alisha: The only part I find really difficult is getting to the post office on time! I have yet to master the whole online postal thing which would make this a LOT easier, maybe that should be a goal. Otherwise, family always comes first and if I am really busy I use the vacation function on etsy. One thing I have learned is to list measurements on everything, vintage sizes can be so different and most of my boo boos have come from guessing wrong, measure.VKC: What giveaway or discount would you like to offer our readers?
Alisha: Free boy or girl item from the shop (their choice) for 2 readers!
